Led by <strong>Professor Matteo Vacchi<\/strong> of the <strong>University of Pisa<\/strong> and published in the journal <strong>Nature Communications<\/strong>, the research offers the <strong>most comprehensive reconstruction to date<\/strong> of how sea level has changed in this region over millennia.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28869\" src=\"https:\/\/www-test.unipi.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/matteo_vacchi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Studying how sea level evolved in the past<\/strong> helps us better understand what\u2019s happening now and what might happen in the future,\u201d says Vacchi. \u201cThis is especially important for <strong>Africa\u2019s coastal areas<\/strong>, which are home to <strong>millions of people<\/strong> and <strong>key natural environments<\/strong> that are increasingly threatened by rising seas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study identifies <strong>three main periods of change<\/strong>. During the coldest part of the last ice age\u2014known as the <strong>Last Glacial Maximum<\/strong>\u2014sea level was around <strong>100 meters lower<\/strong> than it is today. As the Earth warmed and the ice sheets melted, the ocean rose rapidly. This period of <strong>deglaciation<\/strong> caused sea level to rise at rates of up to <strong>25 millimeters per year<\/strong>\u2014<strong>much faster than today\u2019s average<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Between about <strong>7,500 and 1,700 years ago<\/strong>, sea level reached a <strong>high point<\/strong>, in some places even <strong>higher than it is now<\/strong>. It then stabilized for centuries before starting to rise again over the last <strong>100 years<\/strong> due to <strong>human-caused climate change<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The findings are <strong>not just of academic interest<\/strong>\u2014they have <strong>real-world importance<\/strong>. <strong>Coastal regions in West Africa<\/strong>, for example, generate <strong>over half of the region\u2019s GDP<\/strong> and support a <strong>large portion of its population<\/strong>. But they are also among the <strong>most vulnerable to sea-level rise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Although Africa contributes very little to global greenhouse gas emissions<\/strong>,\u201d explains Vacchi, \u201c<strong>it will be one of the regions most affected by climate change<\/strong>. Our work helps show <strong>how sea level has changed in the past<\/strong> so we can better prepare for what lies ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The research involved scientists from several institutions, including the <strong>Earth Observatory of Singapore<\/strong>, <strong>Aix Marseille University in France<\/strong>, the <strong>University of Bologna<\/strong>, and <strong>Italy\u2019s National
