Andrea Serra is Associate Professor of Animal Science and Animal Breeding at the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment of the University of Pisa.
He serves as Director of the Interdepartmental Research Centre for Nutraceuticals and Food for Health (Nutrafood), President of the Bachelor's Degree Programme in Food Science, and Vice-Coordinator of the PhD Programme in Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences.
His research focuses on animal nutrition, the quality and nutritional value of foods of animal origin, sustainable livestock production systems, animal welfare, precision livestock farming, and the valorisation of agri-food by-products within circular economy strategies. His work also addresses lipid metabolism, fatty acid composition of animal products, nutrigenomics, oxidative stability of foods, methane mitigation, gut microbiota, and innovative approaches to improving animal health while reducing antibiotic use.
Professor Serra has coordinated and participated in numerous national and regional competitive research projects and collaborates extensively with industry partners on research and innovation in the agri-food sector.
He has authored more than 200 scientific publications, including 116 papers in ISI-indexed international journals, with over 3,600 citations and an H-index of 33 (Scopus, July 2026). His research aims to enhance the quality, sustainability and innovation of animal production systems while promoting the development of healthier and more sustainable foods.
